Here's how I impressed my cousin and helped a jeweller to attract more customers.

At my sister in law's wedding I bumped into Dave, our cousin. He was asking me what I'd been up to and i was talking about ipad beamer and asked him if he had a smartphone, so I could show him.

Now Dave has an iphone and I'm currently using a Nokia N78.

So I got Dave to go to http://2help2.co.uk/cars and click on "view what's on screen".
Dave was pretending to be watching the screen at sevenoaks lamborghini dealershup.

On my phone I went to http://2help2.co.uk/cars I clicked "control what's on screen"

I clicked on a couple of the car images on my phone and Dave was amazed to see that the images on his iphone changed as soon as I clicked my phone.

We decided that the yellow lambo was probably the best.

What's your favourite?

Anyway so Dave then shows me a couple of images from his recent trip to the Nurnberg ring and an interesting picture of a Porsche that needed some body work done because of a very tight corner.

I asked Dave what he'd been up to and he showed me a recent refit of a jewelers he'd done with amazing, stunning design. One thing missing, though. He needed to put some content on his plasma screen in the showroom. Dave suggested I hook up with Charles on this and now we have a happy jeweler with a complete showroom.

To put ipad beamer in your showroom and give your customers the choice and personalisation they deserve then please speak with Mark N Hopgood (skype: mark.hopgood) directly.

How Control Screen Flickr works

Here's a demo in how the ipad beamer works. This is a tool for discerning people with an eye on technology and luxury goods.

We went to the british museum to see the mummies. My son took some photos with his ipod and using the flickr app, uploaded some of his faves to flickr.

When we got home, grandma and grampy paid a visit and we switched on the tv and the wii.
We went to http://2help2.co.uk/flickr on the wii and clicked view what's on screen.

At the same time we launched http://2help2.co.uk/flickr on the ipod and we clicked the control button. We impressed the grandparents, as we were able to control and show the images from our day out without having to phaff around with computers. Everything just worked.
To try the ipad beamer for your home, showroom or business, please contact Mark N Hopgood on skype: mark.hopgood

who is employee 1066?

Getting your niche right in corporate communications is just as important as marketing your business.

Niche marketing business principles is a great way of getting employee engagement.

Take for example #employee1066

How to get page 1 of google search for corporate digital signage in 2 minutes

It's not actually difficult to get a page 1 on google search. Especially with Digital Signage, because it is such a niche market with so few experts.

An example is Prepario.com who have taken digital signage to the next level - engagement. Not just showing stats, but building business purpose into their messaging to make it engaging.

Anyway here's some examples of how I got page 1 for google digital signage:

1. youtube
2. blogger
3. windows movie maker.
4. some music (difficult bit, but I happen to be a music producer.
5. web browser (chrome)

Here's the image proving the page 1 within 2 minutes.

IBM
Lotus
BP
Chevron Texaco
Chelsea Building Society
Kuwait Chamber of commerce
EHN Sport
Oracle
Computer Associates
JP Morgan

Challenges associates with digital signage in the workplace

This week I've been involved with change management consulting for a growing services group.

Their challenge, much like any organisation, is how do they make sure that they keep and nurture their staff so that the good ones can progress to be future leaders.

To me, this is a real business challenge. Often in organisations, business challenges are pushed aside when the solution is seen as a piece of technology.

In my industry the tools of choice are websites, portals and digital signage, but these will not solve the problems on their own.

A recent communication with Jacqueline Landers led me to think about how my customers use the tools to meet their business needs.

In the early days: lets go back 10 years
We used to turn up to organisations and the AV consultant would have just been and installed a plasma screen and PC. When the customer was asked what do we now do with it, the stock answer was "dunno, er, just show powerpoint on it"

This aproach really was a symptom of the distribution model for hardware. AV box shifters rarely understood business needs and just sold and installed.

Fast forward to the current day and business leaders wishing to communicate with staff and encourage leadership are told by IT, "dunno, er, just put a sharepoint in". Again this is because of the influence of the distributor (in this case Microsoft) who just want to shift box (albeit software). By shift box, here I mean sell multiple units.

How this relates to the current corporate digital signage market
There are a mix of options available to business leaders today.

Management / Content creation
  1. Outsource and get an agency to manage an organisations digital signage.
  2. Manage digital signage internally
Purchase
  1. Buy the software and hardware
  2. Rent or software as a service
Always we've been able to work with a customer in mixing in house content with externally sourced. For corporate digital signage, there has to be local control, but the business owner doesn't want to get technical, so a range of support services can be provided ot make it run smoothly.

From a purchase of equipment perspective we've seen a shift towards software as a service combined with lease purchase for hardware. In other words a simple monthly all in figure which is predictable and easy to swallow.

Understanding your customers perspective can really help make the difference between a dog of a project which no one wants to use against a smooth well oiled machine of a communications system.

To put it another way, communication is key in the early stage.

Top 5 Suggestions when taking on a digital signage system - part1

If you need to implement a digital signage system for the workplace, then here's a list which may help you in deciding which to go for.

1. Make sure it works on your platform
For corporate digital signage to work, there have to be users (people) and players (hardware devices) who will use the system. There are support teams who will have to support the system.

Look at the common denominator in your corporate systems. What is your platform made up of ? Is it Windows XP, Linux, IIS

How to make sure a digital signage system will work for you
Here's a simple test link which will let you know if your platform is up to the job.

Try the following link
hopgood.eu test channel

If you see something like this
(live TV and news feed)

Then you're system is ready to create and view digital signage, with no further modifications. The sample provided is from a Software as a Service digital signage offering.

Software as a Service means that you don't have to set up servers or maintain the system, everything is done for you.

This is part 1 of a top 5 tips on using digital signage in the workplace by Mark Hopgood (c)2008 Mark Hopgood, all rights reserved. Please contact mark@hopgood.eu if you are interested in reproducing any of the content in this article or are interested in using Mark's services to create a digital signage solution.

Delivering bottom line benefits that appeal to the FD

When considering digital signage for the workspace, how can you convince the budget holder or decision maker that it is worth 'investing' in your solution?

With any new business solution an essential part of the roll out is training. Only by explaining and making sure everybody understands the value of the new system can you really say your new solution has been successfully adopted.

OK, so you could use digital signage to give users hints, tips and links. This would ensure that they see the links, but how do you measure and justify this from a business benefits position and make sure you know whether the team has acted on what they have seen..

At Plasmanet we're undertaking discovery programs with our customers. This gives us the opportunity to ...

  • Identify the communications challenges
  • Measure KPIs against these challenges
  • Run a communications campaign
  • Measure the difference
  • Demonstrate the saving / benefit

Which might mean (in real world practicality) for a particular company

  • we know that a lot of our support and training is associated with getting to grips with company wiki
  • we identify how many calls and emails we get asking for support. We know the percentage of adoption of wiki.
  • we run a campaign, communicating the importance, guidelines and links to wiki (using screens, text, email, blackberry etc.)
  • we measure the number of calls / emails to support and the number of unique users of wiki
  • we show how successful the campaign was and how adoption has changed and what mediums were most successful in attracting new users and how the profile of support calls changed

Using a tool such as plasmanet V8 you get to display the message, send it and measure the team's response. This allows you to measure how many of the team and who acted upon the message. By taking this approach you can match up who needs training, who has had training and how many support calls are taken and what level of training course is being demanded.

With a reduction of training and support costs, you have your bottom line benefit. By utilising plasmanet, AV, digital signage or any communication system can now be justified in bottom line benefits that should appeal to the FD and the business.

But, what about home workers - do they get the message.

Well, no! They could do though. In my next blog I'll talk about the home worker environment, and then the opportunities that an office based business can benefit from home worker infrastructure.

connecting onelan to call switches, live data and beyond

Plasmanet call switch and live data connectors for onelan
I'm pleased to announce a set of connectors which work in close collaboration with Onelan and their net top box. The connectors cover a wide range of call switches (the popular ones and some not so popular). In addition, the data connectors give you live access to popular databases and most systems that don't support any connectivity.

Who's using
The connectors are in use by companies such as JD WIlliams, Chelsea Building Society, bp, edf trading, coca-cola enterprises and more. You can be assured that these are robust and have been in place since 2001.

Getting started
If you are interested in discussing how you, your team or company could benefit from the plasmanet connectors for onelan net top box, please contact me, mark hopgood (mark.hopgood at plasmanet-uk.com) and my experienced team will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

History
When, David from Onelan first talked to me about producing his net top box in 2001, I was interested because my signage system, plasmanet, had been a software only solution. It had to be - PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the company I was consulting with, needed a solution that would work with existing hardware.

Over the years, David's model has changed. After a few years, he realised that it was too costly to produce your own hardware and today his linux based box uses mini itx components.

Convergence
I continued to pursue the software route and as a result our specialism has developed into real time data connection to databases and call switches and of course web 2.0.

Avaya - the case for home workers

Avaya (1) have published a white paper discussing the reasons for having home workers.

As the MD of Plasmanet and owner of Hopgood Consulting, I'm happy to employ people offsite to assist with the expansion and growth of my businesses.

The 2 main questions for me are,

1. how do i measure performance

2. as a positive leader, I want to include my team - how can I do that if my team is offsite?

Well the answer to number 1 is clear. The performance of my call center team is recorded using the call switch I have deployed, be it Avaya, Nortel, whatever.

The main challenge is in letting the team know constantly what is needed of them and how they are doing.

The ERIC report (2) about goal setting research, concluded that

a. Feedback increased productivity substantially
b. Goal setting increased productivity further
c. Incentives did not add anything in productivity when combined with the above 2

Well how best to get this information to them?

In the workplace, corporate digital signage systems such as SignageStar and Plasmanet can show data on screens, but installing dedicated plasma screens in the home may not be considered cost effective.

A cost effective and appropriate alternative is to have a desktop channel. A view of a corporate digital signage channel, showing Incentive, Feedback and Team Goals and info would be possible, filtering data for the individual and team.

Corporate Digital signage systems which show exactly the same content on a web browser as on screens, would need minimal reconfiguration of content for application for home workers.

Plasmanet and SignageStar from Hopgood Consulting Ltd offers this functionality.

B2B Marketing – Digital Signage for Business

B2B Marketing – Digital Signage
Comment from Technical Director at Plasmanet, Mark Hopgood

Question 1
Q: With the arrival of flat panel TV technology more retail outlets seem to be using this technology to entertain and inform their customers. The B2B market is also now using this technology. Could you outline how and where you think the best digital signage is being used today in the B2B sector?

A: Within the B2B market, businesses are increasingly using digital signage for internal and external communications. It is important to recognise that both applications would require front-end support rather than a simple screen (e.g. linked to a PC displaying a PowerPoint presentation or video, which is a common application in the retail or B2C space).

By leveraging the power of corporate intranets for internal B2B communications and extranets for communication with other companies, suppliers, partners, customers etc, companies are able to keep those receiving the messages or content displayed by the signage fully informed and engaged. With the right platform and infrastructure (i.e. networked screens across a broadband connection), internal B2B communications can include multiple sites, business unit to business unit or even country to country.

A good working example of how this has been applied internally would be the trading floor, where enterprise digital signage combines market data (e.g. from a business news service such as Reuters) with live television (e.g. BBC News 24) to assist traders in making critical decisions. Or perhaps even consider a large UK supermarket chain that has employed digital signage in employee areas with high footfall, incorporating content from internal sources, such as goals and targets, alongside order information from partners or external suppliers.

Question 8
Q: Digital signage needs to have an infrastructure behind it to update the messages it displays. Networked signs that are connected over the Internet can offer this easily. What key features should a company in the B2B sector looking to use digital signage for the first time look for in the back office support for the digital signage solution they are thinking of buying?

The most important considerations to make before implementing a digital signage solution for B2B are the front-end applications and of course solid remote back office support for rapid resolution of issues. Though widely used in B2C or retail, employing traditional digital signage (i.e. one-way communication relaying the same information through a front-end application such as PowerPoint) provides little or no return on investment for many B2B companies. In order to maximise the benefits, communications teams need to ensure that the front end will support each of the key areas of content (for either internal or external communications applications), which can be categorised into six main areas of messaging: systems (real-time data from existing business applications, such as calls waiting in a call centre); team (team-specific messaging, e.g. weekly rotas); response (alerts for teams or individuals if systems data matches a certain pre-set parameter, e.g. if service levels dropping below 80%, the display turns amber); improvement (live performance figures, e.g. sales conversion rates for field teams); project (status, progress change and completion of a campaign or project) and enterprise (targeting and tailoring of corporate messaging, sometimes depending on location, e.g. CEO address or regionalised target figures).

Any business considering a digital signage solution for B2B use should ensure that all these areas are carefully addressed when creating and distributing content, to maximise efficiency and return on investment.

The future of AV as suggested by Peter Lloyd

When I met Peter Lloyd at the launch of the screen (a forum aimed at retail advertising on screens) in 2004, my company Plasmanet was already engaged in corporate digital signage.
We discussed the future of screen advertising and talked about evolution in terms of digital signage to corporates.

In the January 2008 edition, Peter is still echoing the ideas we discussed in that the value of the traditional AV markets (shifting tin) is declining and more and more the a-v industry is growing in the following areas associated with business:

audio, systems, digital signage, video conferencing and event production

All of these demand technical experience as a-v becomes more business critical.

The STRIPE terminology, helps digital signage to become a tool for business use and following the success of Plasmanet in the corporate digital signage arena in 2007, I'm projecting a healthy year for business critical A-V.

If you are interested in any of the ideas in this blog, please consider contacting me, mark.hopgood@plasmanet-uk.com

The evolution of digital signage - comparison to the internet

The evolution of the internet

Consider the evolution of the internet; first we had Internet (retail / B2C) then we had Intranet (internal comms for business) and Extranet (internal / shared / B2B).

Internet => Intranet => Extranet

Web 2.0 influenced the cycle again to make a more visually exciting and interactive web

Internet 2.0 => Intranet 2.0 => Extranet 2.0

Youtube and Google video influenced unified communications and video conferencing along with SKYPE helping to increase the use of VOIP.

Currently Digital signage in the mainstream is considered a B to C / retail application.

Digital Signage has 2 evolutions to go in order to qualify as a system suitable for business.

Digital Signage => IntraSignage => ExtraSignage

Evolution 1.
Extending DS as an internal comms channel (internal B2B) which includes site to site, business unit to business unit and and country to country.

Evolution 2.
Extending DS as an Extranet comms channel (2 way, external B2B) which includes getting data / media from other suppliers. Both of these evolutions require applications to go on top of traditional digital signage to make them truly interactive and take advantage of business data and effect business change.

The STRIPE applications help in enabling this. Please contact me if you'd like to discuss further.

STRIPE and extending digital signage to the corporate sphere

I coined the STRIPE terminology to help communications teams set their expectations of what types of message or content they may need to show on their corporate digital signage system.

STRIPE terminology is (c)2007 Mark Hopgood and may be used with permission from Mark Hopgood.

Anyone considering a digital signage system or TV distribution system for corporate use should make sure it is fully STRIPE compliant in order to get the benefits needed and return on investment. STRIPE describes 6 opportunities for digital signage in the corporate space. Applications that are compatible with and will run on digital signage solutions make it easier to align your team, using visual tools.

The STRIPE messaging components are available for the following digital signage systems: Plasmanet
Exterity
Scala
Omnivex
Symon
CISCO
AMX Inspired Signage
121View
MediaTile
MultiQ
Ryarc Media Systems
Wirespring
EnQii
Broadsign
C-nari
YCD
ScreenRed
Remotemedia
TELentice
Stratacache

and any digital signage system that supports either live web page display or a live TV feed, such as TV distribution or TV over IP systems. The essentials of STRIPE - 6 types of messaging.

1. Systems
Applications that take data, images, video from existing business systems or applications and make them available for large screen format display.
Examples:
a. Real time gathering of market data and display on graphs.
b. Real time collection of call switch data for contact centers.
c. Productivity data
d. Display of PowerPoint presentations which are either created in house or externally
e. Live display of traffic maps and radio giving congestion information
f. The aggregation on screen of all the above types of informationThere are many more examples of Systems, such as video etc.

2. Team
Applications that take information from the team leaders and members and display it in an impactful way.
Examples:
a. EasyEdit templates that are WYSIWYG and quick to update with very little effort are perfect for situations where you need to instant message in a visual way to the whole team or visitors to the reception.
b. Team Calendars which show who's in and who's out, what the team is up to this week and what visitors are coming in.
c. Weekly meeting minutes - keeping people updatedApplications can be created, but always the focus is on ease of use and a specific business application.

3. Response
Applications that can respond to data from systems.
Examples:
a. Automatically sending a text message if the display shows that there are more than 3 calls waiting.
b. An application to popup a message on team members desktops in the event of a service call coming in or nearing the SLA deadline.
c. The color of a piece of data on screen changing according to value, e.g. service level drops below 80%, change to amber.

4. Improvement
Applications that bring together improvement information against KPI and KPI targets, showing in real time the improvement to a business.

Examples:

a. Displaying % of issues resolved within SLA this month, current % of issues resolved within SLA for the day, congratulations and the names of people who have successfully completed training and had their certificates, combined with a target statement, not only reinforces the purpose of the team, but also shows the difference they can make within the company.
b. Displaying quality of output by a drug manufacturer, hygiene training information, and who has received their certificates, encourages improvement and training.
c. Displaying live customer satisfaction ratings within a call handling center (contact center) against current targets and suggested direction can remind teams of their purpose and help maintain standards.

5. Project
Applications which show status, progress change and completion within a project lifecycle or campaign can keep teams on track and focused.

Examples:
a. Running a new sales campaign from a contact center, a product description, targets and current sales shown on screen can save time away from desks and keep everyone in the project aligned.
b. Showing status of the installation and training when implementing a new system such as SAP can help to set expectation.
c. Providing project status to remote / teams can allow them to be part of the team when they are away providing important direction and status updates.

6. Enterprise
On screen applications which allow multiple teams of people in organisations to get the message across. The classic corporate communications challenge where it is necessary to break through the noise of existing communications channels such as email, phone message, intranet blogs and web 2.0 .
Examples:
a. A targeted global communications campaign where specific communications about vision and goals is regionalised and sent to the corresponding region for schedule during a campaign to restructure services within the organisation.
b. Display of the menu for the canteen or restaurant in each location
c. MD communications / CEO communications monthly update.
d. Guidelines and compliance information displayed on screens with a call to action. Communications executives can report on success of the campaign and from a compliance perspective it can be measured who viewed the information or followed the call to action. For enterprise communication it is important to be able to measure the success of marketing campaigns, so an enterprise class digital signage system should include tracking and contribution from every member of staff, where appropriate.

About this blog:

After 13 years of providing shared applications, intranet and digital signage solutions to business, I wanted to share some information and experience with communications specialists. In this blog I'll outline how businesses can benefit from digital signage. This is not a technology blog, but more about business and aligning teams with visual communications.

Accompanying this blog is the Corporate Digital Signage forum on facebook.

Great article, Adrian.
Could you please specify the audience for this article and website.
What's important to me is that the solution provider is taken into consideration. For example, if you visit the CISCO.com website and search for digital signage specialists with CISCO in London and or South East there are none. Whether their solution is good or not, does this mean that there are any CISCO partners able to put in a solution.
From my experience of digital signage in business, the following attributes are important to the customer and often overlooked.
Service - attached to SLA (Service level agreement)
Felxibility of solution (windows / linux / device / PC) whatever mix supports their current infrastructure or development and the business' current and future plans.
Business applications - adding a business value to digital signage.
You may want to look into STRIPE - components for business success in digital signage which can help any business using any digital signage solution.
I've put my findings on corporateds.blogspot.com
